DAFFODILS COMMUNITY GARDEN
Situated behind St Martins Church Sutton Road Walsall, WS5 3DQ, we aim to change an overgrown plot of land into a vibrant eco-friendly garden; fostering a sense of community pride and neighbourhood involvement in the development and ongoing creation and maintenance of the garden. Helping to develop new friendships and promote improvement in mental health and wellbeing. It will be a series of small gardens including: - flower and shrubs quiet area, growing space with raised beds for individual and communal activity, wildlife and bee friendly space and a tactile and sensory area. It will include an open area for community events and workshops creating an environment which will benefit the whole community. We already have 6 small allotments, 5 active beehives and a small orchard.
Saturday volunteers are regular visitors to the Community Garden, currently ranging from 2 or 3 to 12. We hope to increase this number significantly over the coming months and will encourage regular volunteers to take responsibility for small areas of the garden. If you would like to volunteer or just come along and see what we are doing then on Saturdays 10.00 until 12.00 there will be someone there to welcome you. Alternatively contact Lesley Bates 07939553590.
During the summer months we have had volunteers from local businesses and for one company this has now become a regular monthly visit. This is a great help to us and also is beneficial to them in work life balance and team building. A local school for children with additional learning needs came to work with us for one day in June and we are hoping to build on this in the coming academic year and give them the opportunity to learn more about gardening and wildlife.
We have recently held an activity afternoon attended by local people. Activities included wreath making workshop, pumpkin lanterns, talk from local professional gardener and much more. We are hoping to do more community involvement days in the coming months where everyone will be welcome to come along. The first stage of the garden’s development is a quiet and reflective space where we now need to install a safe and robust pathway which can be accessed by everyone.
